Vienna, in a perhaps not-too-distant future: Humanity has finally overcome disease and natural death. All eyes are on the grand moment when the last person to consciously choose mortality will die in a globally broadcast event, celebrated with great ceremony. This spectacle—the death of the last mortal human—ushers in the era of immortality, leaving humanity to grapple with profound questions about this new order. Who wants, who can, and who must be part of this new world? Is there still an escape if we abolish the end? Who will fund our eternal existence? And what does it all mean for the inequalities of the world?

In their latest production, the directing duo DARUM (Victoria Halper & Kai Krösche), confront the audience with the age-old (and newly relevant) dream of humanity’s victory over death, presented as a “preenactment.” Collaborating with the trio other:M:other—whose music spans experimental jazz and beat-driven club sounds and who have created an original composition for this performance—the result is a multimedia evening blending music theater and performance, live presence and virtuality. What begins as a rapturous celebration of life ultimately takes a darker turn: For while “All Delight” may long for eternity, is it truly ready to face infinity?
