In Dissolution, DARUM’s second virtual reality production following [EOL]. End of Life – a NESTROY-winning VR performance invitated to the Berlin Theatertreffen and multiple other festivals –, Victoria Halper and Kai Krösche send their audiences out into a constantly changing, decaying architecture. This journey into darkness at the intersection of performance and installation uses the means of immersion and virtual/mixed reality to find out what happens when we are more than ever in need of orientation and help but there’s nobody there to hold our hand. Auflösung is an immersive confrontation with what society keeps ignoring, which is that sooner or later, we will all reach a point where we cannot make it alone anymore and rely on support.

Suddenly something is no longer right – where there was just a corridor, there is now a wall, and where memory just opened doors to times gone by, there is a bottomless void. Without signs, you can no longer find your way out of this crumbling building. But what if the helping hand is suddenly no longer there to guide you through the darkness? »Auflösung«, dissolution, is the second virtual reality production by video and performance artists Victoria Halper and Kai Krösche (DARUM), whose VR performance »[EOL]. End of Life« was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, won the Nestroy Prize and was awarded at many festivals. »Auflösung« sends the audience into a constantly changing, dissolving architecture. Against the backdrop of the growing care crisis, »Auflösung« sheds light on what it means for our society and those affected, when people in need of help can no longer be adequately cared for. What happens when we need guidance and support more than ever, but there is no one left to help? The mixed reality performance confronts its audience with a feeling of loss of control, invites them to question the way our society treats the ageing, the sick and the dying and confronts them with their own future vulnerability. The audience actively moves through real and – using a VR headset and controller – virtual spaces. This performance can only be experienced on your own.

Reviews:

„A performance could hardly be more contemporary. Boldly, DARUM wrests the medium of virtual reality from commercial interests, playfully appropriates Meta's technology, and confronts one of the most urgent social issues of our time. The result is a major work“

(Helmut Ploebst, Der Standard)

„[Victoria Halper & Kai Krösche] have once again created an impressive VR work with Auflösung, whose technical sophistication is remarkable and demonstrates just how rapidly the technology is evolving.“

(Sonja Harter, APA)

„The scenography (Matthias Krische) and 3D architecture (Mark Surges) are breathtaking and deeply impressive. [...] The disorientation one experiences, the fears one endures—depending on one's personal resilience—are considerable and utterly captivating. [...] A truly extraordinary experience“

(Barbara Beer, Kurier)
