Victoria Halper and Kai Krösche are currently working on the development of DARUM’s upcoming VR performance, [EOL]. End of Life (a co-production with brut Vienna) during their residency at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, also known as the ZKM. More than just a museum, the ZKM serves as a dynamic platform for research, development, networking, and the exploration of both digital and analogue media art.
The residency has offered us a wonderful opportunity to delve into discussions and ideas surrounding digital media, VR, and the Metaverse, spanning across the past, present, and future. Our research has led us to explore topics such as the Right to be Forgotten and to gain insights into digital preservation practices and the decision-making processes involved.
In addition to immersing ourselves in the exhibitions dedicated to German artists Heinz Mack (Installation and Light Art) and Ulrike Rosenbach (Media and Installation), we've had the privilege of conducting interviews with several employees at the ZKM. These include Götz Dipper (Institute for Music and Acoustics), Bernd Lintermann (Hertz-Labor), Tina Lorenz (Head of the Hertz Lab), head of archive Felix Mittelberger, Dorcas Müller (Laboratory for Antiquated Video Systems), Morgane Stricot (Head of Digital Conservation).
Our residency provides us with a dedicated space for experimentation, equipped with our Meta Quest 3, and grants us access to the extensive resources available at the ZKM, including the comprehensive library.
Though we still have a few weeks remaining, we are grateful for this opportunity. Thank you ZKM and we extend a thank you to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Arts for the travel stipend that has enabled Victoria's participation in this residency.
We look forward to further discoveries and creative breakthroughs in the weeks ahead.
